DENDROBIUM NOBILE It is one of the finest orchids,when in full bloom.It has been in great popularity for more than hundred years,because it flowers freely and regularly and lasts for a longer time as cutflower. Stem or Pseudobulbs erect or arching,rather stout,about 45 cm long.Leaves dark glossy green about 12.5 cm long. Flowers fragrant,1-4 inches short racemes from the nodes,upto 8 cm across,long lasting,variable in colour and shape,of waxy lustre.Sepals and petals,unrivalled in texture and graceful form,white tipped,shaded with rose purple.Lip is downy,white,with abig red-purple or crimson area in throat. Flowering: April-May. Habitat: North and North easternIndia,from Nepal to Bhutan and in Khasi Hills,upto 1500m extending to upper Burma,Thailand and China. Growing: Intermediate to Cool houses.Requires resting periods. Varities: Var.albiflorum is white flowered. Var.Cooksonianum has petals,which are heavily blotched with maroon at base. Var.pendulam has pendulous habit,and larger finely coloured flowers. |
