Among the exotica of pot plant merchandise, hoyas form an exclusive previlage of select growers. These plants need high humidity and low light of 18-20,000 Lux levels and are grown in pots of 9-12 cms. A shade house made out of 75% shade fabric is ideal and the plants can be grown hanging or on benches. The plant usually takes 12-18 months to reach maturity and flowering which comes from the center of the crown.
Exotic Hybrid cultivars are propagated by tissue culture and a well known breeder in the area.

Various combination of soil, farmyard manure, sugarcane bagasse, cane ash are commonly used in commercial cultivation. Small producers use a variety of materials, namely wood shavings, saw dust, leaf pruning, wood charcoal and farmyard manure. Sugarcane straw or bagasse is being used as mulch also.

Planting varies with the vigour of the cultivar, the type of shade and the planting rotation observed.Most of bromeliads are in nature epiphytes and hence they are grown in wood barks as airplants.

TEMPERATURE:

Hoyas thrives when the temperature ranges between 18 C - 27 degrees centigrade.

LIGHT:

Shade is necessary for normal growth of Hoya. The degrees of shading varies with the cultivar, the age of the plant and the climate under which it is grown. The shade requirements usually range from 60-80% of full sunlight. Insufficient shading often results in damage to leaves and eventually death of the plant.
Shaded cloth housed have the following advantages: they provide unform shade, plants may be planted immediately after construction, reduce bird and insect damage to minimum, provide maximum freedom of work space and produce more flowers per unit area.

HUMIDITY:

The best relative humidity is 70-80%.

FERTILIZERS:

250kgs of triple super phosphate per hectare are mixed with the growing medium prior to planting i.e. 4gram per plant. After 15 days of planting about 4 g of 13:13:20:2 per plant per month. Care must be taken to water the plants after application of fertilizer because the fertilizer has the tendency to burn the foliage. The pelletized and slow release forms are less damaging and are more often used.
Many growers use organic fertilizers such as farmyard manure with about 2 g of 13:13:20:2 per plant per month. Foliar fertilizer may be applied monthly.

The main Hoya growing belts are the tropical areas of the world. Among the cultivars that are grown commercially they can be classified into three different regimes. They are

HOYA CARNOSA

Hoya is a genus of 200-230 species of tropical climbing plants in the family Apocynaceae. Native to southern Asia, Australia, and Polynesia. Common names for this genus are waxplant, waxvine, waxflower or simply hoya. This genus was named by botanist Robert Brown, in honour of his friend, botanist Thomas Hoya.

Normally Blooming plants age from 12 month to 18 month or can be more based on the plant type. A blooming plant is a show piece by itself and can be used to decor gardens, patios, receptions or office or hospitality industry needs and they serve to live more longer in interior environments. Most classic example is the once used in airports and lounges and hotel lobbies.

PLANTING:

Hoyas blooms are usually once a year or twice as then they produce offsets. The maturity of the leaves for harvesting is determining by the firmness.
